AmeriCorps NCCC Class 18 Team Leader Spotlight: Courtney Miskell

Courtney Miskell   Name: Courtney Miskell Hometown: Auburn, New York   Courtney graduated from Auburn High School in 2006 and Marist College in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, Concentration in Public Relations. Prior to joining NCCC in 2011, Courtney worked in an internship in Washington D.C.   Courtney served as a Class 17 Corps Member at the Perry Point, Maryland campus in 2011.

Central College music department welcomes Belle Plaine students

  The Central College music department welcomed over 75 students from 14 high schools across Iowa Jan. 26 for Bandfest 2012, with the day culminating in the Bandfest Concert in Douwstra Auditorium. The following local students participated: Jessie Simpson, Belle Plaine High School, clarinet Mason Stull, Belle Plaine High School, tenor saxophone Mily Coover, Belle Plaine High School, clarinet Molly O'Brien, Belle Plaine High School, flute The performance paired visiting student musicians with the Central College Symphonic Wind Ensemble to perform music from Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story," as well as from Frank Ticheli's "Shenandoah," Jay Chattaway's "Spanish Fever," Jari Villanueva's arrangement of "Amazing Grace" and Percy Aldridge Grainger's rendition of Irish Tune from County Derry.

 John Miller   Name: John Miller Hometown: Poolesville, MD   John is serving his second term with AmeriCorps NCCC as the Team Leader for Oak 2 at the Vinton campus. He served his first term with the NCCC Atlantic Region campus in Perry Point, Maryland as a Class 17 Corps Member. John is bringing the following skills to his Team Leader position: flexibility, organization, leadership and humor.

Three VS alumni named to Wartburg Dean's List

Wartburg College has announced that 529 students made the Dean’s List for the Fall Term The students represent 16 different U.S. states and nine other countries. A 3.5 grade point average or better (on a 4.0 scale) is required in at least four course credits for the term. Three of the four course credits must be graded with a traditional letter grade.

2-1-1 Call Center Sees Call Increase Due to Tax Season‏

  United Way 2-1-1 is once again busy scheduling tax appointments!  On January 30, 2012, staff at the United Way 2-1-1 Center answered 434 of 655 calls that came in.  On January 31, 2012, staff answered 335 of 402 calls.   In comparison the center saw 162 calls per day on average in December.   Most of the Jan.

Aaron Koppen Named to Fall 2011 President's List at LeTourneau University

  Aaron Koppen of Shellsburg, Iowa, was named to the Fall 2011 President's List at LeTourneau University. Aaron achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average to receive this honor. LeTourneau University Associate Provost and Dean of Faculty Dr. Steven D. Mason said being named to the President's List is a significant academic achievement and honor".

Benton and Tama County Early Childhood Iowa Board Members discuss

  Benton and Tama County Early Childhood Iowa Board Members met and had discussions under the newly formed Better Tomorrows Board, as part of the States “Lean Design”.   They will be a joint Governing Board beginning July 1, 2012.   Topics of discussion were Board Member Application, ECI Area Name, By-laws, Transition Plan, Conflict of Interest Forms, RFP for Fiscal Agent, RFP for Programs, and Community Plan.

Emily Martinez   Name: Emily Martinez Hometown: Eureka, California   Emily is serving her second term with AmeriCorps NCCC as the Team Leader for Oak 5 at the Vinton campus. She served her first term with the Southwest NCCC campus in Denver, Colorado as a Class 17 Corps Member. She is bringing the following skills to her Team Leader position: good communication skills, time management, conflict resolution and basic knowledge of tools and safety.

AmeriCorps NCCC Class 18 Team Leader Spotlight: Paul Logan

Paul Logan   By: Angela Sarrels   Name: Paul Logan Hometown: Perry, New York   Paul Logan is the Team Leader for team Oak 7 at the Vinton campus. He will lead his team for 10 months while they serve on approximately four to seven projects throughout the North Central Region.   Paul has previous NCCC experience having served as a Corps Member in 2011at the Perry Point campus in Maryland and it was a fantastic experience.

Class 18 NCCC Team Leaders Serve on their First Project

  By: Stephanie Ferguson, Dania Munnigh and John Miller   It has been nearly a month since the AmeriCorps NCCC Team Leaders settled in at the NCCC campus on the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School grounds. On Monday morning, they ventured out on their first service project in Coggon, Iowa. The group of 27 young adults is working at the YMCA's Camp Wapsie, a facility that hosts a variety of programs year round.
